Vision for Edgbaston Scales New Heights
February 2008
The Birmingham skyline is due to change in the next month with the demolition of the 17 storey tower at Edgbaston Shopping Centre, near to Five Ways Island.
Property investor and developer Calthorpe Estates has erected a 28 metre long banner on the tower to communicate the changes that are happening on the development site. A team of abseilers spent the weekend scaling the 52 metre tall tower to secure the fixtures before the temporary banner was finally unveiled early on Monday morning.
The banner will remain in place for a short time until the final stage of demolition is completed to make way for a permanent new addition to the skyline in the form of the new £110 million retail and leisure development, Edgbaston Galleries. Part of Calthorpe Estates’ £350 million investment programme, the 424,500 sq ft scheme represents the largest regeneration project of a key Birmingham gateway and will transform the west end of the city.
Jayne Herritty, sales and marketing director at Calthorpe Estates commented: “With demolition of the current shopping centre already underway, people are interested to know what will replace it. The banner signals that real change is happening and shows that Calthorpe Estates are actively regenerating Edgbaston by injecting new life into the area and creating improved facilities.”
Planning consent has been granted for a foodstore, retail and leisure space, grade A offices, hotel accommodation and 800 car parking spaces at Edgbaston Galleries.
With the first phase due for completion in 2010, the scheme will make an impressive addition to the city, providing a high quality location for work and leisure.
